What Is Garlic Noodles?

Garlic noodles have been a popular dish in many Asian American restaurants for decades. They’re made with Chinese yellow egg noodles and tossed with a savory sauce that packed tons of Asian flavor.

After ordering the garlic noodles from our local Vietnamese restaurants a couple of times, I decided to give it a try at home. Making the restaurant-quality garlic noodles is actually easier than I thought and takes me only 15 minutes to complete. If you love simple but delicious staples, this is one of the best noodle recipes you must try.

Ingredients For Garlic Noodles

  • Butter
  • Garlic
  • Fish Sauce
  • Oyster Sauce
  • Sugar
  • Yellow Noodles
  • Shredded Parmesan Cheese
  • Scallions or green onion
  • Bottled Grated Parmesan Cheese

Fish sauce is commonly used in Vietnamese cuisine. It tastes salty, briny and with a slightly sweet aftertaste. You may find them in Asian supermarkets or on the international aisle in most major grocery stores. It can also be substituted with soy sauce or oyster sauce.

How To Make Garlic Noodles?

  • First, cook yellow noodles in a pot with boiling water until al dente.
  • Next, heat a frying pan on medium heat. Melt the butter in the pan and saute garlic until fragrant but not browned. Stir in a mixture of fish sauce, oyster sauce and sugar. Once the sugar has dissolved, turn off the heat. Add noodles, shredded parmesan cheese and scallion slices, then toss well with the sauce.
  • Serve immediately with grated parmesan cheese on top if desired.

Tips

  • Although garlic noodles are commonly made with Chinese yellow noodles (also known as egg noodles), spaghetti or ramen also works fine.
  • Garnish more grated parmesan cheese and chili sauce to jazz up the flavor.

Garlic noodles taste perfectly without any sides. However, adding more proteins, such as grilled seafood, or stir-fry vegetables to the side will just make the dish even better.
